A recent pastoral visit to remote communities in Benue State by Archbishop Nikodemus of Nigeria revealed a powerful witness of faith, resilience, and communal devotion among Orthodox Christians living in rural parts of the region.
Travelling across long stretches of dirt roads and passing through scattered villages of modest huts, the visiting delegation encountered communities marked by simplicity, yet rich in spiritual life. At each stop, they were received with warm smiles and a heartfelt joy that left a lasting impression.
Despite the challenges of daily life, local believers continue to nurture their parishes with dedication, sustaining vibrant faith communities through perseverance and deep commitment.
The visit began with an emotional stop at the home village of Father Andrew Ioraver, where a memorial prayer service was held for his late mother in the presence of his family. The moment was described as deeply moving, highlighting both personal roots and the quiet beauty of rural life.
The journey then continued toward two Orthodox communities located several hours away. The difficult terrain presented significant challenges, with rough and at times nearly impassable roads causing repeated mechanical issues along the way. Nevertheless, the delegation pressed on and safely reached their destination.
Upon arrival, they were greeted by large gatherings of faithful men, women, and children, who had come together to welcome them after a year-long absence. The atmosphere was filled with emotion and gratitude.
Pastoral visit: A Sign of hope for mission growth in Benue State

During the visit, prayers were offered in the local church, and plans for future development were reviewed. A site was blessed for the construction of a priest’s residence, along with another location designated for a community well to provide access to clean water.
In a neighboring community, local residents and village leaders also gathered in large numbers to extend their welcome. Foundation blessings were conducted at two sites earmarked for new construction projects. One building will serve as a spiritual and administrative center for parish life, while the other is intended as a meeting and activity space for women in the community.
Additionally, newly constructed sanitation facilities were blessed—an initiative made possible through coordinated support and funding secured for ongoing community projects.
The visit underscored the vital role of missionary work in rural areas, where progress often depends not on abundant resources but on the dedication and sacrifice of clergy and faithful alike.
Special recognition was given to the priests serving in Benue State, whose tireless efforts continue to strengthen Orthodox communities across the region. Their commitment to the mission of the Patriarchate of Alexandria and the Orthodox Archdiocese of Nigeria was praised as a source of inspiration and gratitude.
The visit concluded with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation for the enduring faith of these communities and those who serve them.
