His Grace Bishop Nektarios Kabuye of the Holy Diocese of Gulu and Northern Uganda has concluded another pastoral and humanitarian mission to Uganda’s Karamoja Sub-region, reaffirming the Orthodox Church’s commitment to serving both the spiritual and physical needs of some of the country’s most vulnerable communities.
For the past three years, the Diocese of Gulu and Northern Uganda has intensified missionary efforts in Karamoja, extending the Orthodox Christian faith to remote communities through catechetical programs, pastoral visits, and charitable outreach. During this period, Bishop Nektarios, accompanied by members of the diocesan administration and clergy, has undertaken several missionary journeys aimed at nurturing the growing Orthodox faithful in the region.
Karamoja, a predominantly semi-arid region, continues to face severe climatic and socio-economic challenges, including prolonged drought, food insecurity, and limited access to clean water have left many communities struggling for survival.
In response, the Holy Diocese of Gulu and Northern Uganda has sought to address these challenges through philanthropic initiatives supported by generous benefactors.
Current situation in Karamoja is alarming, Bishop Nektarios
During his most recent visit to Karamoja, Bishop Nektarios described the current situation as alarming, noting that temperatures in some areas have risen beyond 40 degrees Celsius, worsening the humanitarian crisis and contributing to the loss of lives due to hunger and related hardships.
“As we traveled through the region, we witnessed firsthand the immense suffering faced by many families,” His Grace remarked. “Some of our brethren in Christ have lost their lives because of the severe effects of hunger and drought. The situation requires urgent attention and continued support.”
As part of the Church’s ongoing commitment to the people of Karamoja, Bishop Nektarios supervised the drilling of another water borehole, a project expected to provide clean and reliable water to both local communities and their livestock. Access to water remains one of the region’s most pressing needs, with many people and animals perishing due to the harsh environmental conditions.
In addition to the water project, Bishop Nektarios distributed food relief to faithful Orthodox Christians and other community members affected by the ongoing crisis and also led prayers for God’s mercy, protection, and blessing upon the region, offering words of encouragement and hope to those facing uncertainty and hardship.
Generous benefactors contribute greatly to Orthodox Church mission in Karamoja
His Grace Bishop Nektarios emphasized that all the assistance delivered during the mission was made possible through the generous support of benefactors and friends of the Holy Diocese of Gulu and Northern Uganda, whose continued sacrifices have enabled the Church to serve communities in need like Karamoja.
Concluding his visit, Bishop Nektarios called upon the faithful and all people of goodwill to pray for the people of Karamoja and the entire nation of Uganda. He urged continued solidarity and support to help mitigate the effects of recurring humanitarian challenges and prevent further loss of innocent lives.
“Let us remember our brothers and sisters in Karamoja in our prayers,” he said. “May the Lord strengthen them during these difficult times, and may He inspire more hearts to support this mission of faith, compassion, and hope.”
The Orthodox Communities in Karamoja continue to serve as a beacon of hope, combining evangelization with practical acts of love and charity, reflecting Christ’s call to care for those who suffer and are in need.
